Discovery Sur Peru E-Bike

Our guide will be waiting for us at the Arequipa airport to take us to our cozy hotel in the city center. There is no E-Bike tour planned for today, as everything in the beautiful "white city" is within walking distance of our hotel. The stay at 2,325 meters above sea level is perfect for acclimatization. There is so much to discover: let yourself be enchanted by the Mediterranean charm of Arequipa and the architectural masterpieces of its colonial past! And let's not forget to immerse ourselves in the diversity of colors of the lively markets and discover the picturesque haciendas of the city.

After breakfast, we depart with our support bus to Huanca, a small village in a beautiful valley characterized by agriculture and livestock. Just outside of Arequipa, our E-Bike adventure begins! After an introduction by our guide, and the safety talk, we have enough time to test the bikes and get familiar with the motor technology. We then travel the first 15 kilometres of the route along a slightly bumpy uphill and downhill path and then on uneven terrain,
Just what our Mountain E-bikes need! From the Abra, the highest point of the stage at 3,596 meters above sea level, we enjoy a fantastic view over the countless terraces of the valley. It's hard to believe that these terraces, which are still used for agriculture today, were once created using primitive tools such as the chakitajlla (hand plough). From up there, it's a 25 km descent to the small town of Huanca. After a delicious lunch, we can embark on a short hike to the Pichirisma canyon, where we can enjoy breathtaking views of the deep gorge from a platform (optional). After this exciting excursion, we will take our bus back to Arequipa, where we can relax in one of the many beautiful haciendas to end the night.

On a less frequented road, away from the main tourist routes, we will first travel in our private minibus from Arequipa to the Colca Canyon, home of the famous Andean condor. Along the way, we will be able to observe vicuñas and other species of llamas that wander through the Pampa Cañahuas National Park. Instead of traveling directly to Chivay, we will drive above the canyon and then descend into the valley through the small villages of Callali, Sibayo, Tuti, and Canocota. Shortly before reaching the rock formation "La Ventana" – the entrance to the Colca Canyon – we got on our eBikes. Fantastic: at 4,400 meters above sea level, we ride our bikes in the middle of breathtaking landscapes wherever we look. A paved road awaits us before Callali, so we pedal the next 40 kilometers – passing small Andean villages and deep ravines – with ease. Now it's time to enjoy our cozy hostel, with its fireplace and views of the Sabancaya volcano.

This day starts early so we don't miss the main attraction of the Colca Canyon: the condor circling over the canyon (the largest flying birds in the world). We will first take our private transport along a quiet unpaved road along the canyon for about an hour and enjoy fantastic views. Then it's time to stop for motor vehicles. The last 2 kilometers can only be covered on foot. During the hike, we climb about 300 meters of altitude to the Collagua de Chimpa fortress, at 3,600 meters above sea level, and from there we have a fantastic view of the canyon. The classic Cruz del Condor observation point is located just opposite, on the other side of the valley. While many visitors have to share this place, we certainly have our platform to ourselves! We will certainly be lucky enough to see the majestic animals in flight. We will also be able to take a look at the archaeological site without being disturbed. Back in the valley, the E-Bikes take us through Madrigal, Lari and Ichupampa (small traditional Andean villages with nice colonial-style churches) to Yanque. Along the way, we can enjoy the scenery with its volcanoes, valleys and terraces and observe the locals going about their daily business. The rest of the afternoon in the Colca Canyon is free for us to realize our own ideas. If you are interested, we can take an excursion to the hot springs (optional).

Immediately after breakfast, we depart for the next important stop of our trip through Peru: Lake Titicaca. We first travel by minibus through the fascinating landscape of the Andes towards Puno. We will pause at the Patapampa pass, at 4,896 meters above sea level, to enjoy the magnificent view of the volcanoes and snow-capped peaks of the region. In the Lagunillas Lagoon we will have the opportunity to observe the animals of the Andes in their natural habitat. Finally we leave the main road before the town of Cabanillas and continue by bike. On the way, we look for a good place to refuel our lunch box. Away from the main road, we hop on our E-Bikes to head to the Sillustani Cemetery, an ancient burial site on the shores of Lake Umayo. The massive tower-like tombs were erected before the Inca period, which adopted this tradition after the conquest of the region in the 15th century and erected similar monuments. An enigmatic place full of mystical energy.

After a delicious breakfast, we set off today to explore Lake Titicaca. We travel by minibus to the rural region around Ilave in about 1 hour. Next, we hop on our bikes and approach the shores of the famous Lake Titicaca, passing through small traditional villages along the way. We pedal along the shore of the lake to the Chucuito peninsula. From there we will have a fantastic panoramic view of the lake and the islands of Taquile and Amantani. We leave the bikes in the transport vehicle and set off on a hike with gigantic views: we enjoy our picnic on Lake Titicaca at Karina Beach and then walk along the rocky cliffs high above the lake until we reach our host family in the idyllic village of Luquina Chico. We will spend the rest of the day with them, enjoying the sunset over the lake, having dinner together and listening enraptured to the stories they tell us about Peruvian life.

This morning our hosts take the proverbial oars and invite us to board their traditional boats. A unique experience - we will paddle on the highest navigable lake in the world! We may even be allowed to help pick up the fishing nets. If you don't want to go out by boat, just enjoy the tranquility and scenery. After lunch, we go back to the bikes. This time we pedal along the other coast of the peninsula to Plateria. Along the way, many small beaches invite us to take a spontaneous dip, although the water temperature is quite refreshing… At a previously agreed location, we arrive back at the main road, where the support vehicle awaits us, which takes us comfortably back to Puno. There we spent another night in the hotel we already know.

Today we leave Lake Titicaca again and continue our journey through the wide plains of the Andean highlands towards Cusco. Our first stop is Lampa, a small town straight out of a picture book. It is also known as "the rose", because of the color of its historic buildings from the colonial era. From this moment on, the scenery becomes truly magnificent! After Lampa, we will take the bikes on a beautiful and remote route to the Tarukani region. On the descent, we must look for the endemic plant called Puyas de Raymondi, which only grows in some regions of the Andes. It can grow up to 12 meters tall and produces more than 8,000 flowers and 6 million seeds! The journey continues through the Tinajani Canyon. The gorge, where the wind and weather have created strange rock formations, is an unforgettable sight on this trip. Before reaching the main road again, we board the support vehicle and head to today's final destination: Checacupe, where we will spend the night in a beautiful hacienda.
By the way: today's stage is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our bike tour in the Andes of Peru! The route is so unknown that it doesn't even appear on Google Maps. But above all, we conquered the highest point we reached by bike during our trip: A pass at an altitude of 4,600 meters in the Tarukani region.

After a good breakfast, we soon arrive in the province of Cusco. Instead of staying on the well-known main roads, we have once again found a great side route to be able to discover the hidden beauties of the country much better. Once again, we continue cycling along a beautiful and little-traveled side route that runs along the shores of the lagoons of Pampamarca, Asnacocha, Acopia and Pomacanchi. We pedal along the so-called route of the 4 lagoons, which guarantees great natural attractions. We change to the minibus for the last stretch to the Sacred Valley.

Today an exciting tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas awaits us. First, the minibus takes us to Maras. We will visit a huge salt extraction complex, which consists of many terraces arranged in basins - there are hundreds of them! In the dry season, the pools are filled with salt water from a nearby spring, the water evaporates into the pools and what is left is the salt crust, which is then "harvested".
After these stunning images, we head to the starting point of today's eBike stage, not far from the beautiful Huaypo Lake. We take a little-frequented track through perhaps the most beautiful area of the sacred valley, the plains of Maras - Moray. We head to the village of Misminay, from where, after a 1-hour hike, we have a breathtaking view of Moray, where the Incas created circular terraced gardens in natural sinkholes to study the effects of different climatic conditions on various crops. We continue on our eBikes to Pachar, at the foot of the Sacred Valley. Our minibus will eventually take us back to our family hotel, where we will arrive in the late afternoon.

After an early breakfast, the minibus takes us to the Malaga Pass at an altitude of
4,230 meters. A few meters below, a popular and easy descent route takes us to the jungle areas of Huayopata and Santa Teresa. On the descent route of approximately 66 km, we experience very different landscapes. Along the way, we will stop to visit a coffee and cocoa farm where, after a delicious lunch and a guided tour, we will learn how cocoa is processed and, of course, we will taste it! We travel the last stretch to the village of Santa Teresa in the minibus, which takes us directly to our hotel. We can spend the rest of the day relaxing in the hot springs of Cocalmayo, which are very close by (optional).

We get closer and closer to the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu. First we take the bus to the Hidroeléctrica train station. From there we walked along the train tracks and the Vilcanota River to Aguas Calientes Pueblo. On the way we see bromeliads and birds. We also see Inca terraces built near the river. In Aguas Calientes, the starting point to Machu Picchu, we check into our hotel and have the rest of the day free.

This morning we woke up early and took the bus to the Inca city of Machu Picchu. We finally arrive and see the legendary city with our own eyes. We walk through the ruins and marvel at the extraordinary architectural and mystical masterpiece. Then we take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and from there the train to Ollantaytambo. Once we arrive in Ollantaytambo, we will be picked up and taken to our hotel in Cusco by private coach.

There is much to discover in Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incas. The city is full of life and combines the history of the Incas and the colonial era. We will learn about its eventful past on a guided tour of the city, in which we will also visit the Temple of the Sun Koricancha.

The colourful San Pedro market and the many souvenir shops in the historic centre are also worth a visit. We will not be bored. In the evening, perhaps we can complete our trip with a glass of Peruvian pisco in a typical restaurant.

On the last day of our trip, we will be taken to the Cusco airport at noon to take our return flight or continue our trip. How about another adventure, for example, in Bolivia, Chile or another South American country? Or maybe a few more days in Cusco or in the Peruvian jungle?
